Amir Khan Knocked Out In One Round

Amir Khan was knocked out inside the first minute of his WBO intercontinental lightweight title defence by Colombia’s Breidis Prescott. The Bolton boxer was put down for the first time after just 30 seconds when hit by two lefts in quick succession. Khan was clearly in trouble as his legs turned to jelly in such a way that it was reminiscent Bruce Grobbelaar’s spagetti legs trick for Liverpool against AS Roma.

Khan, 21, managed to regain his feet but was clearly in trouble and the fight was as good as over. He carried on after an eight count but Prescott unleashed another barrage of quick shots and Khan hit the deck once more before being counted out after 54 seconds.

It was a first defeat for Khan, who won an Olympic silver medal at the 2004 Olympics, in the 19th fight of his professional career. Before the fight Khan said he had been working on his much-criticised defence with new trainer Jorge Rubio, but Prescott rocked the Bolton fighter within seconds of the start. Something Prescott has been predicting all week long. When Khan went down for a second time the referee called the fight off. A stiff jab snapped Khan’s head back and he was soon caught by a crisp left hook by the hard hitting Colombian.

There are no longer question marks over Khan’s chin and his ability to take a punch - it is clear he cannot. So, will Khan ever go on to win a world title?….possiblely not, you can train a fight to develope his defence but your can’t build him a new chin. This is the fourth time in a relatively short career that Khan has tasted the floor. Previously, he had got away with it against smaller, lighter pucnhing boxers - but this time he was well and truely exposed.
