Nokia have just launched there first touch screen mobile phone - called the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music. The Xpress Music tag should tell you the 5800 is a great music phone, and it really is! A 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and a dual-LED flash. Assisted GPS with Nokia Maps installed.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a 3G device with HSDPA support. When you first pick up the 5800, you’ll be surprised to feel it’s nowhere near as wide as many of its competitors, it really feels like a regular Nokia candybar, despite the big screen and lack of keypad. This is a considerable advantage when looking at the wide bodied iPhone 3G or Samsung Omnia, it also feels well-built and the 109 gram weight ensures it feels properly planted in your palm. The design may not be inspired, but it’s by no means unattractive, meaning you’ll want to wipe the inevitable finger prints off to keep it looking nice! So, it looks good and fits in your pocket comfortably - but is it special? Yes, it is.

Nokia have placed the 5800 XpressMusic in the middle of their range and haven’t bestowed it with an N-series tag (we have to wait for the N97 for their N-series touchscreen), however the specification of the 5800 is so good, it out performs the majority of its rivals! First of all, the display is stunning, with everything looking bright and clear, then you have a 3G HSDPA connection plus Wi-Fi, GPRS and EDGE, covering just about every possible option out there. With Symbian onboard, the 5800 XpressMusic is a proper smartphone too, with all of the downloadable software and customisation this brings with it. No matter what you want to do, there will be an app for you. For example, you want to use your 5800 for viewing office documents? No problem, just download QuickOffice and you’re away!

This version of the operating system has had an overhaul so it can be used on a touchscreen phone and it works very well, with Nokia implementing a ‘double click’ system to decrease the likelihood of making a wrong choice. The music and media player is also first rate, with the Comes With Music download service active, a pair of very loud stereo speakers, a MicroSD card slot with a maximum 16GB capacity, easy touch controls and a front mounted dedicated music key - music is very much the 5800’s party piece. Add in Assisted GPS, the 3.2 megapixel camera, a quoted 17 day standby time, a 3.5mm jack plug and video support and the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic begins to look very much like a top range, all-in-one device!

Summary of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

All these features look good on paper, but when you factor in the 5800’s reasonable price, it becomes difficult to find many other mobile phones which offer such excellent value for money. We may have had to wait a while, but Nokia have really delivered the goods with their first full touchscreen mobile phone, the 5800 XpressMusic.
